Richard Malone Spring 2021

Rehearsal is a brilliant showing

Richard Malone’s spring fashion week collection was called Rehearsal and explored comfort, perception of time, and sense of self-preservation. It was inspired by two books which never left his side during the time of global self isolation: I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid and Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s A Ghost in the Throat.

Both deal with contortion of time, which seems quite fitting during the Covid Era. This reevaluation of time and surrealist view of our condition can be seen throughout the collection, in the XXL proportions, exaggerated shoulders, dramatic drapery and padded hips. As other designers this season, he put an emphasis on a certain sense of armor, to shield the body, protect it. He also continued working with deadstock materials to elevate what already existed.
