Including two group shows open to the public! See all below
Wait. Is NYFW even compatible with a publication like No Kill Mag? No…and Yes. There is alot wrong with the industry including exploitation of people and the planet and, of course, our bête noire –the presence of polyester.
But we unapologetically love fashion and want to support smaller brands and those actively working differently. So here are some of the places you’ll find us this season.
Collina Strada
Collina Strada is always on the cutting edge of fashion that takes into account people and the planet. Which still leaves plenty of room for sex appeal and style. (See Zendaya to see what we mean.) This season there’s a collab with TômTex and we’re excited to see what that brings.
Ronald Van Der Kemp
This is the first time RVDK will be at NYFW. Amsterdam based Van Der Kemp has been making “sustainable couture” before anyone else and does it better than most. Add this name to your inspo list.
Caroline Zimbalist
Bioplastics X Fashion? Yes, please! Caroline is both a fine artist and fashion designer who makes one-of-a-kind garments that combine bioplastics and fabric to great effect. She also was recently an Artist in Residence at the ACE Hotel Brooklyn and that opening is Sept 12th!
Sam Finger
Known for both upcycling and inclusivity in his casting, Sam Finger rocks a NYC vibe. Checking out his show-spo video on instagram we’re intrigued…and Wonderland seems the perfect setting for his show.
JRAT
The brand of Janelle R Abbott and the ultimate in upcycling. She also has an amazing service called Wardrobe Therapy and is booking appts in NYC now.
Allina Liu
Wearable Romance Inspired by Horror, Shibari, & Dutch Old Masters • Ethically Crafted, Sustainably Driven …need we say more? Like Collina Strada one of her sponsors is TomTex so we’re interested in how she’ll be incorporating this innovative material.
Melke
Another fave at No Kill. Emma Gage’s mix of nostalgia and playfulness never fails to surprise and delight.
5000
Taylor Thompson/5000 is a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist. Originally from Oakland he creates ‘menswear’ that can be worn by anyone…like me. Or you.
dapperQ NINE
The ultimate fashion extravaganza, the queer style celebration now in it’s 9th year is at the Brooklyn Museum and promises to be electric. Designers include: ALEGRÍA, FreeMen by Mickey, Soid Studios by José González, Zoe Grinfeld, KEITH KELLY, and Transguy Supply. Hosted by artist, musician, and writer Buffy Sierra.
Krater
Deep in the heart of Brooklyn (aka the house of YES) Krater is a cultural platform where fashion, art, and music converge to challenge the conventional and embrace the extraordinary.
Kurriizmatic (NYC), an innovative brand transforming discarded textiles into wearable art; HAUEISEN (NYC), known for deconstructing and distorting the human form while challenging perceptions of gender through fashion; Sarah Wondrack (NYC), a fiber artist whose work redefines the human silhouette and transcends the traditional meaning of garments, Papel de Punto (COLOMBIA), a leading brand in Latin America reinventing and elevating knitwear with a neat but fun approach on sustainability; and La Bloom (COLOMBIA), a slow fashion brand celebrating the diversity and strength of women through alternative styles.
