Wear What You Already Own – How to Make it Easy

Spoiler Alert: An app and a little Tik Tok Inspo is all you need!

I love shopping as much as the next person. But as someone who shops a lot, I also look at my closet while getting ready to go out and say, “Ugh, I have nothing to wear,” and then dramatically fall onto my beds. If only there were a virtual marker above every garment that told us how many times we’ve worn it.

Oh, wait. We live in the 21st century. This definitely exists.

Introducing: 30 wears. Your new favorite *clothing* tracking app.

I personally love tracking apps. They’re the only app that sends just the right amount of push notifications, so you always remember to use it. They also keep me in line, so when I discovered an app that can help me track my closet and how often I wear clothing, I was all in.

I spent two full weeks trying out 30 Wears, and here are my final thoughts: It’s staying downloaded on my phone.

One of the easiest ways to bring sustainable practices into your daily routine is wearing what you already have! Overstocked closets are something I think everyone deals with. An app that reminds us of what we already own can switch the brain to think more sustainably.

How 30 Wears Works

When you open the app, you are presented with a calendar. This is where you can add your garments from your closet. On another tab, the wardrobe. Think opening scene from clueless. The wardrobe is where the user can upload photos and descriptions and categorize the garment.

There are two ways to best use the app.

First, before getting dressed, lay the garment flat on your bed and snap a picture real quick. Even if this isn’t the pair of pants or top you end up going with, the photo will be in your camera roll and can easily be added to the virtual wardrobe when you get the chance.

The other option is to put together the whole outfit, grab an OOTD picture, crop it when you upload it, so it’s just the top or just the pants, and add it to the wardrobe. I personally love this option, and when I get home from the day, and I’m unwinding, I’ll usually have a notification that will remind me to track my clothing. This ensures I will add the garment to my wardrobe, and it can begin being tracked. With enough usage, the app will tell you how many times you’ve worn something and what you typically pair it with.  It also allows you to retire a garment when you no longer own it!

Now, I have only used this app for two weeks; imagine what it can look like after a whole month?

It was Made to Help You Wear What You Own

The app was started back in 2015 after a survey in the UK gave statistics that the average woman wears her clothes only seven times before it is discarded. The director and producer, Livia Firth of Eco-Age, set the goal of wearing each item at least 30 times. An honest and realistic goal.

Asking yourself, “Will I wear this 30 times?” when shopping puts yourself in the right mentality when buying clothes.

TikTok influencer Isabelle OlLer, @Izzyoller, is on a similar mission, and we’re here for it.

Isabelle, Izzy for short, has gone viral on TikTok for a series where she styles a piece, usually thrifted the same number of times as it cost in dollars.

For example, in this video, she styles a vintage white button-up, which she bought for 6 dollars, in 6 different ways. The first outfit is styled as if she were working as a personal assistant, with the button-up under a corset top, a midi skirt, and some kicks. The second outfit is plaid flared pants, a metal belt paired with the button-up, and some white sunglasses. She says it’s perfect for antique shopping. The video has four other outfits, and that’s only one of the many she has posted on her profile.

It was Izzy that kickstarted it for me. I remember seeing the white button-up video, which sparked this fire in my brain. One of the looks she has is this long-knit skirt, and It occupied a large portion of my brain for days. I was so obsessed with it that I was scouring the internet to find something similar. But Izzy reminded me to wear what I already own! She inspired me to turn one of my knit dresses into a midi skirt, and I even paired it with a white button-up to pay homage to the original inspiration source.

Izzy is the voice you need to hear; she’s the little angel that sits on your shoulder and reminds you that you already have something just like that in your closet. And if you think you don’t, you definitely do. We see a rise in “influencers” promoting fast fashion and micro-trends to easily-influenced Gen-Z. Having someone with a niche style, very true to themselves is the kind of influence that is vital.

Now take the style inspo that Izzy gives and a handy dandy clothing tracking app; I’d say you’ve got a pretty good shot at never saying the phrase, “I have nothing to wear” ever again.
