Zero Waste Daniel Honors The Golden Girls with a Playful, Planet-Friendly Capsule Collection

–Chloe Lewis

Brooklyn local and sustainable fashion designer Daniel Silverstein aka Zero Waste Daniel has devised a limited-edition clothing collection to honor The Golden Girls 40th anniversary in collaboration with Disney Entertainment Television. The result? A perfectly playful homage, comprising a vibrant, kitschy range of gender-free clothes and accessories that reimagine sitcom nostalgia through Silverstein’s signature upcycled lens.

True to his – and the girls’ – form, the collection is bold. The 25-piece collection offers both niche and explicit references that appeal to the gamut of fans – many items in the collection sold out within minutes of its launch. Standouts include prints inspired by Blanche’s banana leaf boudoir and the epically 80s orange couch, a retro ‘Golden Girls Bowling Club’ set, and crewneck sweatshirts featuring handmade mosaics of the girls’ faces. All fabric scraps were used to make pouches, eliminating production waste.

This collection is a thank you for all the laughter, lessons, and late-night cheesecake.

A lifelong fan and virtual mentee of the girls, Silverstein says he grew up with their guidance and describes the collaboration as a “pinch me moment.” He credits the characters’ candor and humorous approach to difficult issues as an influence on his own outlook. “I was raised by these women to face [difficult issues] with humor, with heart, and in a way that faces them head on rather than shying away from them.” he says. “This collection is a thank you for all the laughter, lessons, and late-night cheesecake.” That same mix of candor and charm is reflected in both his approach to ethical production and his unmistakably playful aesthetic.

The launch of the collection came with an immersive store takeover of ZWD’s Bushwick flagship, transforming the space into a Miami-meets-Brooklyn fantasy. Pastel-hued interiors, banana-leaf wallpaper, curated vintage decor, and photo-ready installations invite visitors into a reimagined dreamscape celebrating the iconic series. A thrift section styled in homage to the Girls’ legendary looks rounds out the full experience.

The collection is available in-store through August 17, but if fans can’t make it to his Bushwick storefront in time, they can shop the collection online at zerowastedaniel.com through 2025.
