Two Events We're Hitting this #NYFW - and you should too!

Right now outside it’s officially 92 degrees and my phone says it “feels like” 99 on the Brooklyn pavement…so suffice to say we’re hiding out inside and thinking about the cooler weather that is (hopefully) around the corner and the events in autumn. And a big one in NYC is of course fashion week. The idea of “fashion week” has become very controversial and a symbol of excess consumerism -to the point that Extinction Rebellion has called out to cancel fashion week in London.

We absolutely agree that the fashion system as it currently is needs major rethinking to get aligned with the needs of the planet. Still there are two events that we are not going to miss (and neither should you!)

dapperQ’s Sixth Annual New York Fashion Week Show

Flyer by Alithea Castillo

A half a dozen years ago our friend Anita Dolce Vita, the editor of dapperQ gathered her troops to put on what was the first New York Fashion Week queer style show. It was -and remains- the largest fashion event celebrating LGBTQ bodies and fashion during NYFW. Held at -and in partnership with- the Brooklyn Museum it is seriously not to be missed. and

Zero Waste Daniel: Sustainable Fashion is Hilarious!

IMG_3251.PNG

Always appropriately unconventional, and building upon his earlier comedy shows and zero waste-fashion designs, Zero Waste Daniel is holding his latest one-man NYFW show —“Sustainable Fashion is Hilarious” — at Ace Hotel New York in NoMad on September 12th. I’m a super fan of his work and own a piece (or 3) of his but missed out on his show last year. I am not making that mistake again!

NYFW Show Sustainable Fashion is Hilarious:  September 12, 8pm
Tickets Now Available

If you can’t make the show consider checking out his exhibition which will run a bit longer. Starting on September 9th and running through October 4th, Ace Hotel New York will exhibit Daniel’s eco-streetwear at its Art Gallery Space. The exhibition, ZWDSNY, features work from his upcoming collaboration with the NYC Department of Sanitation’s official nonprofit, the Foundation for New York’s Strongest.

In the gallery exhibition ZWDSNY, Daniel will lead visitors through his step-by-step journey leveraging Sanitation’s retired attire, materials and hard-to-recycle industrial items once considered trash, transforming them into a collection of cool streetwear and accessories. The ZWDSNY capsule collection utilizes traditional and unconventional materials to re-envision design and create without waste.

“With our ambitious goal to send zero waste to landfills, Daniel’s collection exemplifies the beauty that can be found in recycling and reuse,” said Julie Raskin, Executive Director of the Foundation for New York’s Strongest, which buildings unconventional collaborations to encourage New Yorkers to embrace sustainability. 100% of proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Foundation.

I live my life and run my grassroots design business with a driving goal:  inspiring people to protect our environment. My hope is that my collaboration with Sanitation’s foundation will encourage people and the fashion industry to take on climate change in beautiful and creative ways.
