The reason why I strike this September 20th is that we need a cultural shift in how we see nature and what is our role as human beings in the ecosystem. We need to realize that colonialism, Indigenous oppression environmental racism, war, extreme capitalism, materialism, and the agricultural industry are the root contributors to the climate crisis and without a conscious and just solution we are not going to change.
I’m a high school student and environmental activist from Seattle who is striking on September 20th and 27th. I worked as a marine biology intern this summer, and as I was going through some old data I stumbled across a trend: years with warmer temperature had skinnier fish. It was scary to see the breakdown of ecosystems right there on my computer screen, so I’m striking to preserve the future of our planet.
