We started this list 2 years ago, and at that time almost all “vegan” boots were simply plastic. (ewww!) Times have changed and this is no longer the case. The few brands here that still make boots from traditional “vegan leather” choose sources without PCP, formaldehyde, PVC, phthalates, azo-dyes, or chrome.
These new eco-friendly options are our favorites for a reason. Crafted meticulous attention to detail and style, they’re destined to become staples in your collection. Whether you’re seeking a chic aesthetic or functional must-haves, they will seamlessly integrate into your layered fall and winter outfits.
The squared toe and heel of these Vivaia boots remind us of ’60s mod style but the materials are thoroughly modern. A knitted upper from recycled materials is combined with a rubber sole and a strong arch support insole. We love these navy boots but they come in several different colors.
Eileen Fisher is the OG of responsible fashion. Her designs lean minimal, cool and timeless. These boots are no exception. Pull on and go. A sleek bootie in textured stretch knit made from recycled plastic bottles. With a wedge heel and contrasting welt detail.
*leather lining, so not fully vegan.
BHAVA is an innovative women’s footwear brand founded by designer Francisca Pineda. Founded in 2012, Bhava continues to set a new standard in footwear design by sourcing the highest quality artisan, organic, recycled and cruelty free components. Named after the punk rock icon, their take on BLONDIE’s style and attitude conveys a mix of retro coolness and bold unapologetic glamour.
Their Italian vegan leathers do not contain aromatic amines, PCP, formaldehyde, PVC, phthalates, azo-dyes, or chrome.
These stretchy boots are knit with a blend of RWS-certified merino wool and Rothy’s signature thread (aka plastic bottles). And when they eventually wear out you can bring them to a Rothy’s store to be recycled.
In 2023, Rothy’s factory achieved TRUE Platinum certification, validating that it’s operating with Zero Waste Practices by diverting solid waste from landfill, incineration and the environment.
Another fave from DTC brand Vivaia! A breathable and water-repellent knit upper with a low heel, these boots easily slide on and come in several colors and a few limited edition prints. We like the energy and vibe of this black and white print, but you do you!
Need statement boots with pointed toes that declare you an edgy rockstar? Look no further than VEERAH’s HEDY boots. With the shoe’s removable accessory, you can choose to dress up your boots with a tiny removable ankle belt or you can go without for a more classic and refined look.
VEERAH proves meticulous in their efforts to ensure that every feature of the shoe is sustainable and practical. The insole is made of algae to absorb impact, the lining is made from sustainably-sourced wood-spun Tencel textile to wick away moisture, and a Natulon zipper which is made from 99% post-consumer recycled material.
We spoke to No Kill Mag’s own fashion editor Francesca Vuillemin about her work on VEERAH’s campaign. Read the article and see the pix here.
